The Focus of Certification Consultation

EMDRIA Certification is an opportunity to develop genuine competency across all aspects of EMDR therapy. The consultation process supports you in becoming more skillful and effective with your use of EMDR.

Developing Core Competencies

Phase Mastery (The 8 Phases of EMDR)

  • Deep understanding of each phase's purpose and process
  • Knowing when to move forward and when to spend more time in a particular phase
  • Integrating the 8 phases fluidly rather than mechanically

The 3-Prong Approach & AIP Model

  • Comprehensive treatment planning addressing past, present, and future
  • Understanding the Adaptive Information Processing model and how it guides your work
  • Case conceptualization that identifies patterns and themes

Target Identification & Setup

  • Identifying effective targets that will create meaningful change
  • Creating coherent targets where image, cognitions, emotions, and body sensations align to precisely capture the essence of what needs processing
  • Understanding the three areas of distortion (Responsibility, Safety, Choice) for selecting cognitions
  • Using the Floatback and Somatic Bridge techniques to find feeder memories
  • Using the Umbrella Technique (Dr. Philip Manfield) for target identification and preparation

Effective Processing

  • Knowing when to "stay out of the way" and when to get more involved
  • Handling forward associations and recognizing when new targets emerge
  • Recognizing when your client has reached the end of a channel and when to return to target
  • Avoiding target drift — staying focused on completing the current target before opening new material
  • Knowing how and when to increase or decrease activation during processing
  • Tracking whether your client is within their window of tolerance
  • Co-regulating with clients — using your calm presence to help them stay within their window of tolerance during processing
  • Identifying when processing is complete

Working with Challenges

  • Recognizing and addressing blocks to processing
  • LOUA (Level of Urge to Avoid) — targeting avoidance defenses (Jim Knipe)
  • Managing defenses and incomplete sessions
  • Effectively using cognitive interweaves when needed
  • Preparing clients adequately for trauma processing
  • Successfully utilizing EMDR resourcing
  • Working with dissociation and strong affect
  • CIPOS (Constant Installation of Present Orientation and Safety) and BHS (Back of the Head Scale) for safely working with dissociative clients (Jim Knipe)

Broad Clinical Applications

  • Using EMDR for anxiety, depression, relationship challenges, addictions, attachment trauma, chronic pain, early trauma, recent events, panic and phobias, Adult ADHD-related issues
  • Using EMDR to address grief and loss, including clearing obstacles that prevent clients from accessing and processing their grief
  • Adapting EMDR for neurodivergent populations, including clients with autism, ADHD, aphantasia, and alexithymia

Specialized Protocols

  • Understanding the role of various EMDR protocols (FSAP, DeTur, Chronic Pain, Early Trauma, Imaginal Nurturing, Dyadic Resourcing, Recent Events, Phobia Protocol, Panic Protocol, etc.)
  • Knowing when to use specialized protocols versus the standard protocol
  • Adapting your approach to fit your client's needs

Combining Individual and Group Consultation

Many clinicians find the most effective approach is combining both — individual consultation for focused competency development and certification hours, group consultation for learning from diverse cases and affordable ongoing support. This combination provides both the depth of individual attention and the breadth of learning from group participation.

Timeline for Certification

The time it takes to complete EMDRIA Certification varies based on several factors:

Factors Affecting Timeline

  • How quickly you accumulate EMDR sessions and clients
  • Your caseload and practice setting
  • Whether you pursue certification immediately after the basic training or wait
  • How frequently you attend consultation

Typical Timelines

  • Fast track: 1 year (with active EMDR caseload and regular consultation)
  • Moderate pace: 1.5–2 years (steady progress with consistent work)
  • Slower pace: 2–3+ years (part-time practice or building caseload gradually)

There's no rush — what matters most is developing genuine competency at your own pace.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to start working toward certification right away after the basic training?

No. Many clinicians complete the basic training, use EMDR for a while, and then pursue certification when they're ready. However, starting consultation sooner rather than later helps you develop skills while your training is still fresh.

Can I count my basic training consultation hours toward certification?

No. The 10 hours of consultation for completing the basic training are separate from the 20 hours for certification. Certification consultation must occur after basic training is complete.

Do all 20 certification hours need to be individual consultation?

No. EMDRIA requires at least 10 hours to be individual consultation. The remaining 10 hours can be either individual or group.

Can I switch consultants during the certification process?

Yes, though it's generally more beneficial to work with one consultant throughout for consistency and continuity.

What if I don't have 25 EMDR clients yet?

You can begin consultation before you have the clinical experience. In fact, consultation helps you feel more confident using EMDR, which helps you build your EMDR caseload.

How do I document my consultation hours?

I provide documentation of all consultation hours for your certification application.

What happens after I complete the consultation requirements?

Once you've completed all requirements (training, consultation, clinical hours), you submit your application to EMDRIA. They review your application and, if approved, grant EMDRIA Certification.

Is certification permanent, or do I need to maintain it?

EMDRIA Certification requires ongoing continuing education to maintain. Current requirements are available on the EMDRIA website (View EMDRIA Certification Requirements).
